The Unexpectedly Inspiring Story of Miss India 2018, Tamil Nadu’s Anukreethy Vas
Miss India 2018, Anukreethy Vas has been inspired by her mother who taught her to face adversity without fears.
Anukreethy Vas believes that a smile can keep everyone going, and admittedly, the 19-year-old has everything going for her right now!
The young woman is the newly-crowned Miss India World and bagged the coveted title after edging out several other contestants. While her journey from Trichy to Mumbai is indeed impressive, what is truly inspiring is that Anukreethy has been associated with an NGO which works for the education of transgenders, since 2015!
“One of my school friends was transgender and was abandoned by her family. That struck me, and in 2015, I started to work with an NGO, which focussed on the education of transgender children. We are now planning to adopt 30 transgenders and educate them,” she told IANS.
Anukreethy credits her mother, Seleena, for her values and said that being while raised by a single mother is challenging, it teaches one to be strong in the face of adversity.
“The challenges started from school. I studied in Trichy, which isn’t really a city. But I learnt to put on a brave face because my mother didn’t let me down at any point. She used to say, ‘You are a tough person, how can you cry?’ and that’s how she brought me up,” says Anukreethy.
Anukreethy is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in French, in Loyola College Chennai. She is also a state-level athlete and aspires to become a supermodel.
For now, Anukreethy is basking in the glory of her victory and wants to bring the Miss World crown back to India. Despite the sudden fame, she claims that she still has a normal life and acknowledges the support she receives from her friends back home.
