The Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro is all set to open up access to the domestic terminal Indira Gandhi Airport. The line will also ease the commute between Gurgaon and Noida, taking about 50 minutes. The Magenta Line will cover the city’s arterial Outer Ring Road, connecting major educational institutes as well.
Here are 5 things to know about this Line.
1. The Janakpuri West Metro Station on the Magenta Line will have India’s tallest escalator.
According to a report in the Financial Express, a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson mentions that the escalators installed at the Janakpuri station are the highest in India, with a height of around 15.6 metres, with a total length of 35.3 metres. Each of these escalators weighs around 26 tonnes.
2. The Magenta Line is called the “Corridor of Knowledge” as it connects four major universities of the National Capital Region, namely Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the Indian Institute of Technology, amongst others.
The latter even has a dedicated station by the same name, while the Magenta Line’s Munirka station will cater to the former, the Jamia Milia Islamia station caters to the university it is named after. Adjacent to Amity University is the Okhla Bird Sanctuary station.
3. The opening of the Magenta Line will allow the metro corridor to operate 24 trains, gradually increasing the number to 26 trains, as well as reserves.
The train’s frequency will be 5 minutes and 15 seconds, during peak hours, and if passenger traffic demands increase, shorter loops with higher frequencies will be added.
4. The Magenta line has cut the Noida-Gurugram commute by about half the time.
Now, commuters will take around 50 minutes, as against 90 minutes earlier. Passengers do not need to change lanes from Rajiv Chowk but can use the Magenta line, and interchange for the Yellow Line (Samaypur Badli-Huda City Centre), from Hauz Khas.
5. Incidentally, the new section of the Hauz Khas station will be the deepest station in the Delhi Metro network, with a depth of 29 metres.
It replaces Chawri Bazar station, which was the deepest station, 25 metres below ground level.
