Hyderabad to Get Swanky AC Bus Shelters with ATMs, WiFi & Water Dispensers!

Waiting for a bus will no longer involve standing under the sun, sweating buckets, and running out of patience. At least not in Hyderabad, as according to a report in The New Indian Express, residents of the city will soon get swanky bus shelters equipped with air conditioning, toilets, drinking water, and charging points!

Travelling in public transport in cities is one of the most eco-friendly and cost-effective ways to get around. Not only does it cut down on the fuel usage, if more people start using public transport for their daily commute, vehicular pollution will reduce, and road congestion will get minimised.

However, the lack of basic facilities at bus shelters is a significant deterrent, and only prolongs the agony that comes with the endless wait.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is set to change this notion for good in Hyderabad. On 22 May 2018, KT Rama Rao, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister, will inaugurate the first air-conditioned bus shelter in Hyderabad at Shilparaman, near Hitech city.

Currently, two other prototype bus shelters are getting the final touches, and the GHMC has proposed the construction of 430 and renovation of 396 existing bus shelters under the Design-Build-Operate-Finance-Transfer mode. The project will be divided into four categories, and the cost of each shelter will range from approximately ₹1 lakh–₹2 lakh.

The four categories of the 826 bus shelters are as follows:

Their size will be 200ft by 30ft. The amenities they will provide are— dustbins, toilets, mobile charging points, pay & use water dispensing units, Wi-Fi, ATM or coffee vending machines, AC in the sitting area, fan, CCTV.

At a later stage, they will also have a ticket vending machine.

2. Grade 2: Proficient Bus shelters

They will be 25ft by 8ft in size and will have the same facilities as the advanced bus shelter except for air conditioning, ATMs, and coffee machines.

3. Grade 3: Basic Bus Shelters

At 20ft by 5ft, the toilets and water dispensing units will be optional in these shelters.

4. Grade 4: Minimal Bus Shelters

These shelters will be really simple bus stops sized 10ft by 5ft or 5ft by 3ft. Each of them will have a dustbin.
