Meet Lt Supriya Choudhary, the 2nd Indian Woman to Join the Territorial Army!

Joining the army means putting service before self. Life is tough, from the very start. A strong frame of mind and impeccable self-discipline is required by those who aspire to protect the nation. Lt Shilpy Gargmukh, who was the first territorial army officer, was inspired by family members in the armed forces and donned the olive green uniform to serve the nation as a combat soldier.

Following in her footsteps, Lt Supriya Choudhary has become the first lady to join the Territorial Army in Rajasthan.

The Territorial Army works as a unit of the Indian Army. Those who are in the outfit are given rigorous training every year for a specific period. The Territorial Army helps the regular army with static duties, and protects the nation’s shores and arranges air units.

Hailing from the Gokhari village of Alsisar tehsil in Jhunjhunu district, Lt Choudhary is of the opinion that women should always be ready to serve their nation, given the opportunity. The officer credits her husband Varunasinh Pooni, and family.

Working as a scientist at ONGC since 2013, she was eager to apply her scientific knowledge and research acumen in the field of Oil & Gas. Supriya has incidentally commanded the Republic Day parade at the ONGC Headquarters in Dehradun and spoke of her ONGC experience as enriching, professionally and personally.

The officer also spoke of the importance of physical fitness for a healthy work culture and credited ONGC for allowing her to pursue multiple sports like badminton, lawn tennis and golf, trekking and social activities. She is grateful for the facilities and platforms provided there.
