3 Indian Entrepreneurs Win Grand Prize At Global Innovation Showcase!

The American Society Of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) conducts an annual global competition, the Innovation showcase (ISHOW), for hardware led ventures, across various regions in Africa, India and the USA.

Focusing on social innovation to help solve social and environmental issues the ASME ISHOW is an important event for socially conscious innovators.

The 2018 ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW) was held in Bengaluru earlier this month. Eight finalists were picked out of 150 applicants, and consequently, three amazing entrepreneurs and their teams were selected as the regional winners.

The winners are Sanskriti Dawle, Vinayak Nandalike and Balaji Teegala.

Sanskriti Dawle and Saif Shaikh of Thinkerbell labs received the award for creating Annie, an audio-tactile device that serves as an economical replacement for costlier braille displays. Built with a Raspberry Pi motherboard, it has a refreshable braille display, a digital braille slate and a perkins-style braille keyboard.

The device will help numerous visually impaired students in India, who don’t have access to proper braille technology.

The second winning innovation was Sparsh, which a hand-held medical device created by Vinayak Nandalike and Ram Mohan of Yostra Labs, which will help physicians in diagnosing diabetic peripheral neuropathy—a permanent nerve damage that occurs as a result of the disease.

Sparsh hopes to replace conventional diabetic peripheral neuropathy screening devices which are not only bulky and expensive but can only be operated by trained professionals,

The third winning team comprised of Balaji Teegala and Manisha Laroia of Brün Health. They developed an affordable and wearable device that aims to diminish the high neonatal mortality rate in India.

The team’s prototype, Brün CG, collects and records fetal medical data and transmits that information to physicians, thereby allowing for more timely treatment for patients in remote locations, the news release said.

“The extraordinary inventions put forward will make it possible for doctors and teachers to do more to help their patients and students, respectively, live better, more fulfilling lives,” noted Charla K Wise, the president of ASME.

The three ISHOW India winning teams will share $500,000 in cash and in-kind prizes with the winners of ISHOW Kenya and ISHOW USA, which will take place in May and June, respectively.
