Your Mobile Will Soon Let You Skip Lines and Sail Through NH Toll Plazas. Here’s How!

If you are one of those people who is often struck by wanderlust, you will know the feeling of waiting at a toll plaza. The break in the journey gets a tad bit tedious, and one wishes they could drive on and not stop till they have to.

Well, you can soon keep driving without stopping as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to NHAI will unveil a mobile app which will have multiple options to commuters for paying user charges on national highways, including mobile phones linked to prepaid wallets, credit cards or bank accounts.

This app will ensure that the amount is automatically dedicated from the bank accounts of commuters, and will allow seamless travel through toll plazas.

NHAI has selected five vital stretches for implementing the innovation, including the Delhi-Mumbai and the Bengaluru-Chennai stretch.

Commuters will need to download the app and provide all vehicle details, which will be verified from Vahan, the national vehicle database.

According to NHAI officials quoted in the Times of India, there are two ways to pay the amount.

One way is to make a pre-paid transaction for all toll plazas on the way, before commencing on the journey. When the vehicle reaches a plaza, the system will generate a QR code, which you can scan to cross the toll plaza. The deduction will be made from the prepaid wallet, through the app.

The second way is to link the app with the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), to pay the toll directly from your bank account. For this, two different types of technologies —a mobile-based Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and mobile-based ultrasound technology—are being tested and will be used to make such a payment.

When the vehicle reaches the toll plaza, the system identifies the toll lane, toll amount and vehicle category—thus enabling the money to be deducted from your bank account, through the UPI gateway.

NHAI officials are also interested in eventually implementing a system that is present in highways across Taiwan. In this system, there is no toll gate, and overhead electronic gantries use the RFID technology to track vehicles with FASTags which automatically deduct the toll amount.
