Rs 0 to Anything: Now Pay Any Amount to Use Western Railways’ Station Toilets

In a one-of-a-kind initiative, the Western Railway has introduced a “Pay as you please” urinal, for suburban railway stations. The plan was implemented last week on Friday, and now, the Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Mira Road, Dahisar, Bhayandar, Naigaon, Kandivali and Borivali Railway Stations have the facility.

The ultimate goal is to introduce this to all suburban railway stations under the Western Railway.

The paid urinals are generally dirtier than the free ones, and this move has been put in place to drive contractors to keep the toilets clean. According to a Western Railway official in the Hindustan Times, the contractors will pay more attention to the washrooms from where they accrue monetary benefits.

There will be a box outside the urinals, and the contractor will get the funds collected inside it. The Western Railway started charging Rs 1 for urinals, and Rs 2 for the washroom, six months ago. The Central Railway, however, stopped charging after passengers complained.

The concept of voluntary payment is good, as it will encourage conscientious passengers to contribute, and no matter how small the amount, the contractors will hopefully be motivated to maintain the urinals properly.
