Exclusive: Meet the Hyderabad Cop’s Whose Act of Kindness Won the Internet!

B Gopal is a traffic policeman who has been in service for a decade now. Currently posted at the Kukkatpally station, he has been serving in this station for the last four years.

On Sunday morning it was duty as usual for this policeman but a picture that has now gone viral shows him going beyond his call of duty to serve the needy.

Gopal feeding Buchamma

We, at The Better India, spoke to the man of the moment, Gopal, and this is what he said.

“I was on duty at the junction near Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Kukkatpally like I usually am. I saw a very frail-looking old woman, lying on the side of the road, looking completely exhausted and worn out,” he says.

On Sunday when Gopal found this old woman lying by the road, the temperature in Hyderabad was almost 40*C. With no food and water, the old lady had almost collapsed due to fatigue.

“I did what I thought was the need of the hour,” he says with complete humility.

“There was a shop nearby so I bought Buchamma (the old lady) some tiffin. Poori and masala was what was available at that time. She was so exhausted that even the task of picking up the food and eating was difficult for her. So I fed her,” he said.

“Since I am often on duty in this area, I have seen Buchamma earlier too. A few months ago a vehicle hit her, and we (police) helped her and took care of her. Since then she has always held a special place in our hearts,” he says.

Buchamma herself is a mother to not one or two but nine children, all of whom have abandoned her.

“I wish to see all this at least one of them comes forward to care for her in her old age,” says Gopal.

On duty

As we wrap up our call he says, “I always feel upset when people say that the police are all corrupt and never come forward to help. I often hear that we (policemen) lack compassion and humanity. But that’s not the truth at all. We do serve the people, and very often do more than our means. Hopefully, after seeing this picture, at least a few will change the perception they have about us (policeman).”

Applause and appreciation have been pouring in from all quarters for Gopal.

The man of the moment- B Gopal

The social media savvy Cyberabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar and Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy both issued congratulatory messages to Gopal.

Here’s saluting this policeman!
