Expediting Justice: Delhi Govt. To Set up Night Courts for Victims of Trafficking!

Thousands of women and children are trafficked every year and are subjected to cruelty after cruelty. Unable to escape, they find themselves stuck in a vicious cycle. Even after they have been rescued, justice for them is a long and often arduous procedure, delayed and sometimes denied.

In an effort to provide some relief and swift justice to the victims of trafficking, the Delhi Government plans to set up night courts. Additionally, it has proposed several other benefits, including corpus funds for their rehabilitation.

As per the draft policy on rehabilitation and combating trafficking of women and children, the AAP government is advocating initiatives like video conferencing to enable the victims to narrate their story without being physically present in the courtroom. They are also reviewing the licensing mechanism of all massage parlours, bars and beauty parlours in the city.

According to an AAP official, various committees at the state and district levels and anti-trafficking squads in every district will be formed. The official says the night courts will help the victims, as they won’t have to spend the night in police custody.

Interestingly, the policy has identified Delhi as a major hub for trafficking of women and children from various parts of India, and the neighbouring countries.

Apart from the trafficking victims themselves, the holistic policy also covers police protection of NGOs, social workers of the advisory board, and government officials who are working in red light and high-risk areas. It also aims to provide legal aid to the rescued victims.

Most importantly, the policy wants to establish family counselling centres, in these potentially high-risk areas. They also want all trafficked children to enter the mainstream, and get a shot at reestablishing their lives.

Comments from all pertinent stakeholders and departments have been invited for policy. Hopefully, this move by the Delhi Government will ensure that these unfortunate victims get the much-needed justice they deserve.
