Quick-Thinking Mumbai Bus Driver Saves 20 School Kids After Brakes Fail!
At 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Goregaon-based Ryan International School’s 27-seater bus was on its regular route to drop kids home. When the bus arrived near Oberoi Mall, the driver realised that the brakes of the bus had failed.
When the brakes of a school bus carrying over 20 students failed, one bus driver’s alert thinking saved them all from a major tragedy.
At 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Goregaon-based Ryan International School’s 27-seater bus was on its regular route to drop kids home. When the bus arrived near Oberoi Mall, the driver realised that the brakes of the bus had failed.
Though panic had set in among the students, driver Kisan Gaikwad did not lose his calm. He drove the vehicle from the main road onto a footpath. The bus slowly crashed into street lights and then into a tree and eventually coming to a halt. Though the vehicle was damaged, not one student was harmed.
Soon the school was contacted, and another bus was quickly arranged to drop the school kids home.
Speaking to Mid-day, Kisan said, “I was not speeding, and the roads too were comparatively empty, so it was possible to do so. The conductor and attendant inside the bus helped to calm down the scared children. Since the door was damaged, children had to get off the bus through the emergency door.”
Kisan has a school bus driving experience of over 15 years. He expressed that perhaps it was due to the newly introduced technology in the brake system, that the problem wasn’t spotted earlier.

Kisan also made sure to register a non-cognisable (NC) offence in the Dindoshi police station regarding the incident, reports the publication.
“We first ensured that everybody got out. Then another bus was called, and the parents of the children were informed. Some who live nearby reached the spot to take them home,” he told Mid-Day.
We hope more schools take notice of this incident to run thorough checks on the buses which carry school kids home. We also salute Kisan Gaikwad for his quick thinking and also the conductor and attendant aboard the bus, who ensured that the kids escaped the unfortunate incident unhurt.
