Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Will Soon Have All-Women Ticket Checking Crew

Starting from 2018, Indian Railways has begun employing different measures to raise the participation and involvement of women in its extensive workforce.

Following the launch of all-women railway stations in both Mumbai’s Matunga and Jaipur’s Gandhinagar, the Western division of the national transporter has now upped the ante by conducting an interesting experiment of deploying an all-women crew of TTE (travelling ticket examiners) in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express!

And the railway supervisors were visibly impressed by the initiative, as they found a 66 per cent increment in earnings from penalties and fines by the end of the day!

The idea was the brainchild of Aarti Singh Parihar, the senior divisional railway commissioner of the Western Railways’, who told TOI, “Women are honest and the earnings on the day we held the trial run with all-women TTE staff proves it.”

Out of the six TTEs onboard the Shatabdi, only two are women, but the authorities plan to turn the experiment into an operational paradigm by unleashing an all-women crew on the train from March 8, the day commemorating International women’s day.

According to Ved Prakash, who is the Director (Information and Publicity) of IR, the move has been initiated to promote women empowerment. “Only one group of 6 women TTEs would be on duty at a time, and the total duration of their shift will around 6 hours and twenty minutes,” he added.
