Come March, First Two Doors of Bengaluru Metro Will Be Exclusively For Women!

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has recently taken steps to make metros a safer place for women passengers. Beginning next month, only women will be allowed to access certain doors of a metro train.

The move came after several women complained that they face difficulty while entering and exiting metro compartments.

Mahendra Jain, the Managing Director of BMRCL, remarked on the move saying, “The idea is to ensure convenience for women while entering or exiting the train.” He was speaking at a function to mark the official handover of three intermediate cars which will be used to ready the first six-car Metro train in Bengaluru.

“Two out of the four doors in the first coach in a few trains in both the Green Line and Purple Line will permit only women to use them. Depending on the response, we will extend it to all the trains on our network,” Jain said.

He also added that these steps would not be necessary once the six-coach trains are introduced, and the first coach is entirely reserved for women passengers.

BMRCL will also introduce a total of 150 coaches by June 2019. A contract worth Rs 1,421 crore has been signed with the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) for the delivery of these coaches.

“The integration and testing for the coaches would go on for two months. Once it is certified, full-fledged production would start. From June to August we hope to get six coaches a month which would increase to nine a month in September and would go up to 12 coaches a month after that. By June 2019, all the 150 coaches would be delivered.”
