Go Goa Green: State’s First Zero-Emission Electric Bus Hits the Road!

If you happen to be in Goa or are planning a visit soon, do look out for the newly introduced electric buses!

This is in keeping with the state’s commitment towards developing environmental friendly public transport. As of now, 100 such buses are plying in the city of Panjim on a trial basis. All main bus routes across the state will be covered in the next few weeks.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar flagged off the first bus from the Panjim Bus stand. Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) is conducting these trials.

The bus is 100% electrical with zero emissions. Each such bus will take about four hours to be completely charged and once charged will be ready to ply 250 kilometres at about 70 kilometres per hour.

The buses come in two variations and have a seating capacity ranging from 31 to 39, in both types of buses. The ticket prices remain the same as other buses, as of now.

With Goa suffering from lack of a good garbage disposal policy, biogas-run buses are being seen as equal partners in the long run to solve the problem of garbage and transport. The bio-gas bus will also be launched in February, once a trial filter is in place, reported Indian Express.

“We are looking at all these measures as most developed nations have completely shifted to these models from petrol and diesel, as far as public transport is concerned. We have been studying these proposals for a while. Now, all these will be put to the test, and a study report will be called. It will be based on the findings which will be made on the combination of bus models,” said Carlos Almeida, Chairman of Kadamba Transport Corporation, reported the publication.

In October 2016, Ashok Leyland developed India’s first ever fully electric bus, developed for India and made in India. These electrical buses are being manufactured at Viralimalai, Tamil Nadu and Alwar, Rajasthan.

Here’s hoping to see other states adopt these zero-emission buses soon.
