While a Central government job is still the gold standard for lakhs of Indians, the actual number of those jobs may soon see a drastic fall. However, if the latest report by PTI is considered, this may not actually make any difference to most applicants.
According to a new memorandum by the Finance Ministry dated January 16, 2018, the government now wants an audit of all jobs that have been vacant for over five years, so that they can be abolished.
This seems to be yet another belt-tightening measure by the government, which has been looking to rein in expenses.
The Finance Ministry’s memorandum directed financial advisors and joint secretaries (administration) of all ministries/ departments to identify and abolish such posts, as reported by PTI quoting an official from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has also directed its additional secretaries, joint secretaries, chiefs of paramilitary forces, and other attached organisations, to submit comprehensive reports, said the official to PTI.
The same official claims a preliminary estimate shows thousands of job posts are simply lying vacant.
It must surely come as a surprise to many that there actually are government job posts vacant for five years or more since tens of thousands always seem to apply for the smallest of jobs.

The exercise has not been without its share of hiccups. Not all ministries and departments provided a comprehensive report, with some giving only partial information.
