When Garima Singh clinched the phenomenal All India Rank of 55 in UPSC 2015, she was already a serving IPS officer with quite a few impactful achievements to her name.
She was instrumental in setting up the woman’s helpline number ‘1090,’ and was also a member of the team which completed the probe of the infamous Mohanlalganj rape case.
Her dedication and impartial behaviour set the precedent of a sincere police officer, and she became a role model for women and downtrodden communities in her ambit of jurisdiction.
Garima is now an IAS officer, and her work ethic is as impeccable as ever. In her first posting as an IAS probationer, the 2016 batch officer was given the additional charge of district social welfare officer in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, and is helping make the initial steps into the world of education for children a memorable affair.
It all started when Garima took over her post in Hazaribagh district and noticed the dilapidated state of a local anganwadi.
Recognising that it is important for children to have good memories of the first place they received their education from, she decided to adopt the anganwadi in Matwari Masjid Road and transform it into the first model centre in the district.
Spending ₹50,000 out of her own savings, Garima got the entire building freshly painted with alphabets adorning the walls and had a bright hoarding fixed at the entrance.
Additionally, she equipped the preschool with educational materials like charts, learning blocks and toys, which she hopes will ignite inquisitiveness and help drive the learning process of these children. She also bought a rocking horse for them so that they can have some fun while they learn.

“The Matwari centre was in a bad shape. If it’s not a bright and friendly place, kids don’t like it. I hope other officers, public representatives, businessmen and philanthropists adopt anganwadis. Now, the district administration will revamp 50 more such centres by March 31,” Garima told The Telegraph.
The entire work concluded on Tuesday, and the revamped anganwadi will be soon inaugurated by District Collector Ravi Shankar Shukla.
Garima shared that the intention of taking up the project was to ensure that the first learning experience for all the 22 children enrolled at the centre, was memorable.
Dedicated civil servants like Garima Sharma, who go the extra mile to make a tangible impact on the society, are the reason why people continue to have faith in the administrative system of the country.
