These 5 Cricket Stars Are Making Thousands of Lives Better Off-Field Too!

For a majority of Indians, cricket is undoubtedly a religion in itself. With each victory and loss, Indians all over celebrate and mourn in equal measure. While cricketers are worshipped and are looked upon in adulation, we bring you stories of 5 cricketers who totally live up to that praise by the work they do off-field.

1. Virat Kohli

India’s captain, known for his aggressive leadership on field, is all heart. Early last year, when Virat was in Bengaluru for the IPL, he visited Charlie’s Animal Rescue Centre (CARE) and spent time with the adorable animals fostered at the center. While his visit wasn’t supposed to be more than 15 minutes, he ended up staying for close to an hour. In that time he also took on the responsibility to care for 15 dogs that have disabilities.

2. Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir remains the fourth-highest run-getter in the IPL history. He has been in the news recently for all the good he has been doing. Under the banner of his foundation, he recently started launched a campaign called ‘Ek Asha’, which is a free community kitchen in Delhi. The community kitchen serves free meals to the poor and needy.

3. Yuvraj Singh

In 2011, Yuvraj was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left lung and underwent successful treatment for the same. In his quest to raise awareness and help fight the stigma attached to Cancer in India, he founded an organisation called ‘YouWeCan’ in July 2012. Based in Gurugram this organisation works with those diagnosed with cancer and also helps counsel families.

4. M.S. Dhoni

Heralded as of India’s finest captains, M S Dhoni certainly has a very large fan following. The MS Dhoni Charitable Foundation, which was founded in 2010 partnered with The Help for Heroes Foundation to hold a series of charity matches, the proceeds of which will be for supporting of the Indian Army.

The first charity match was played at The Oval where a sum of 20,000 pounds was raised. This amount was handed over to the Indian Army in support of the wounded and severely injured soldiers in the line of duty.

5. Sachin Tendulkar

This list would be incomplete without the mention of the work that Sachin Tendulkar has silently undertaken. He has been supporting Apnalaya, an NGO based in Mumbai, where he sponsors 200 under-privileged children every year. In 2011, he raised a corpus fund of 1.35 crore to help more than 300 kids in their treatment and recovery from cancer.
