Kolkata Turns over a New Leaf; Adopts E-Vehicles and Charging Points

The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is taking long strides towards making the area green and sustainable.

After GPS-controlled bicycles, they have another ace up their sleeve—GPS-controlled electric vehicles.

This is being done to develop a green transport system in the township, and what’s more, there will be dedicated charging centers to cater to these e-vehicles.

NKDA authorities have invited various private firms to pitch designs of e-vehicle charging stations, and an expert panel will evaluate the designs before the winner is selected.

Speaking to The Times of India, an NKDA official said, “A charging station for an electric vehicle needs to have advanced technology. What these stations will look like is also important.”

He further said that while electric vehicles run for approximately 150 km on a single charge, there is always a possibility that the battery gets drained unexpectedly and the vehicle owner is left stranded. The authorities wish to address this.

The NKDA has already introduced golf carts, e-rickshaws, bike taxis and electric vehicles in New Town. An NKDA official said the purpose of encouraging the use of e-vehicles is to minimise emissions, and go green.

Office goers make up a significant part of the population of New Town, and according to Tamal Pal, an IT employee, many of them face transport issues. The introduction of e-vehicles will definitely help in solving this problem and also ensure that the environment is not affected.
