For The First Time, Mumbaikars Can Soon Watch Flamingos Up Close In Thane
So far, the only good spots to watch flamingos in Mumbai have been Sewri and Uran, but neither of them offer a good view.
Mumbai attracts thousands of flamingos every year who fly from Kutch in Gujarat and stay in the city for about six months. However, to watch these birds in Mumbai, the only good spot so far has been Sewri and Uran, where you can only see them from a distance.
But soon, you will be able to watch flamingos up close on a boat ride. The Maharashtra Mangrove cell has decided to start this service through the Thane creek mangroves covering a 1,690-hectare area which attracts about 40,000 flamingos and other migratory birds every year.
The ride will be one-hour long and will cover a distance of 10km on a 24-seater boat.
It will start from Airoli in Navi Mumbai and take you to Vashi, and then all the way back reports Mumbai Live. The birds won’t be disturbed by the boat as it will run at a regulated speed. The service will open to the public from February 1, 2018.
To book one seat on the large boat, you will have to pay Rs 300 on weekdays and Rs 400 on weekends, the publication reported. There is also a seven-seater boat called ‘Kaustabh’ which can be hired by a group of seven for Rs 5,000.
A trained guide will accompany you on the boat and you will also be given a manual with details of the bird in the creek.
