When Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asked Rakesh Sharma (India’s first astronaut) how their country looked from space, he famously replied, “Saare jahan se achcha.”
In addition to doing scientific work on space stations, astronauts also take a lot of photographs. In fact, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have a treasure trove of satellite imagery that scientists have been using for over a decade to follow changes on Earth’s surface. Periodically, these incredible pictures of our planet are made available for public viewing.
In the recent years, many high resolution images of India from space have also been released by NASA, ISRO, International Space Station (ISS) and individual astronauts.
