Bricks Didn’t Work, so Railways Has a New Plan to Tackle Garbage

The Indian Railways has decided to deal with the nuisance of garbage bags being thrown on the tracks, once and for all, by building concrete walls along the tracks.

A senior official of the Railway Board spoke to the Economic Times and said that the problem is especially acute in metros, due to the slums and habitation around the tracks.

He added, “We tried to build brick walls, but they were damaged. We also proposed wire meshes, but the idea was shot down because they could be tampered with and were not durable. So, now we have decided on concrete walls.”

The Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), under the Ministry of Railways, has provisioned the drawings of these walls, which will be built by zonal railways.

In November 2017, the Civil Engineering department had asked the various zonal railways, to find a solution to the garbage issue, and had suggested wire meshes. The zonal railway chief engineers suggested walls instead because wires offered little resistance against people who wanted to throw garbage on the tracks.
