Karnataka to Buy 640 Electric Vehicles to Serve as Public Transport

Under the Central government’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles (FAME) India subsidised scheme, Karnataka will purchase 640 electric vehicles, an official said on Monday. Forty of these will be buses, 100 will be cars, and 500 will be three-wheelers. These will ply in Bengaluru as public transport.

“We have received approval from the Department of Heavy Industries to purchase the electric vehicles under the National Electricity Mobility Mission of the Central government’s Fame India scheme,” said the statement, reports IANS.

A subsidy of up to 60 percent will be provided by the Department, along with funds for setting up charging points across Bengaluru.

FAME India was launched in 2015 under the National Electric Mobility Mission (NEMM) with the motive of promoting environment-friendly vehicles across the country. It will do so by providing fiscal and monetary incentives for adoption and market creation of both hybrid and electric technologies vehicles.

It will incentivise all kinds of vehicles – two-wheeler, three-wheeler auto, passenger four-wheeler, light commercial vehicles and buses.

The electric vehicles for the commuting public will save fossil fuel and protect the city’s environment. The scheme will also cover hybrid and electric technologies. These include strong hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles. The scheme wants to achieve self-sustenance in the stipulated period.
