A storage box developed by the ICAR – Indian Institute of Horticulture Research (IIHR) – can help extend the shelf life of leafy vegetables. It is a high humidity storage box that can help keep your greens fresh for up to 48 hours at room temperature. It doesn’t affect the quality or nutrition of the products, reports The Hindu Business Line.
The storage box can store 12kg to 15 kg of produce and comes at a price of up to Rs 10,000. For regions with high temperatures, gel packs can be used to bring down the temperature by 6 to 8 degrees.
According to the publication, a high-quality polymer material has been used to make these boxes by the IIHR team, which is odourless – unlike plastic.
“Greens are very difficult to preserve as they wither out within a few hours. The technology helps in preserving freshness and nutrition. It is also helping us from an economic point of view by reducing the losses” Vignesh Kumar Manogaran of Waycool, which uses these storage boxes in three outlets, told the publication.
The high humidity boxes are airtight, which helps improve the humidity inside (up to 98 percent). The technology has been licensed to Chennai-based Waycool Foods and Products Pvt Ltd, which also operates vegetable retail chain SunnyBee. It will manufacture the storage boxes. A large-scale trial is also expected soon. Interested customers have already begun enquiring.
