A University for Railways? Vadodara to Soon Have India’s First Ever Dedicated Institute
The proposed university will be managed by a Ministry of Railways created non-profit company under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013.
India’s first ever National Rail and Transport University (NRTU) finally finds the green flag by the Union Cabinet, after being stalled for more than three years since initial proposal was placed.
The move has been initiated with the aim of revamping the country’s archaic railway system, through proper research and development and skilled human resources, which will help the Indian Railways to maximise their potential.
According to a statement released by the Railway ministry, the proposed university is to come up in Vadodara and will be managed by a MoR created non-profit company under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013.
Apart from providing financial and infrastructural assistance, the company will also play the titular role of appointing posts like Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor of the university.
The statement also mentioned that the university would have an independent management board, comprising of professionals and academics who will function with full autonomy to perform its academic and administrative responsibilities without any interference from the managing company.
At present, Vadodara houses the National Academy of Indian Railways (NAIR), whose spatial and infrastructural facilities are to be suitably modified and modernised to meet the requirements of the university.
“The university plans to use latest pedagogy and technology applications such as satellite-based tracking, Radio Frequency Identification and Artificial Intelligence to improve on-the-job performance and productivity,” Railway officials said, reports The Economic Times.
The Ministry of Railways has envisioned a mega-scale enrolment of 3,000 full-time students in the university and will be funding the entire project.
