Brave Kolkata Cop Set to Become First On-Duty Police Officer with a Prosthetic Leg

A terrible accident has failed to stop traffic sergeant Sudip Roy, and he is all set to possibly become India’s first traffic cop on duty with a prosthetic leg.

On June 7, 2017, Sudip was run over by a minibus while manning the rush hour traffic on Dufferin Road in Kolkata. He sustained multiple fractures to his right leg, resulting in its amputation and a metal plate fixed at his pelvis. Following rehabilitation, Sudip was fitted with a prosthetic leg, to help him with daily functioning.

Despite senior officials warning him to choose a job that would suit his disability, he was determined to return once again as a traffic cop, a dream that he had been following since he was a child.

“I had dreamt of being a sergeant all my life. I just love to be on the road and cannot possibly live without doing that. It was the one single goal that helped me in my recovery. I will resume duty at all costs,” he said in a conversation with The Times of India.

Sudip is set to return to his job in late February 2018 and has reminded sergeants everywhere that commitment to the uniform is always a number one priority.
