Want More Protection Online? Google All Set To Revamp Privacy Tools

In light of the rise in malicious and intrusive software and mobile activity in the Android universe, Google recently announced its Unwanted Software Policy update, which it will put into effect in the next two months.

In a statement released by the Google Safe Browsing Team, member Paul Stanton stated, “In our efforts to protect users and serve developers, the Google Safe Browsing team has expanded enforcement of Google’s Unwanted Policy to further tamp down on unwanted and harmful mobile behaviours on Android.”

This means any app handling personal data including phone numbers, contacts, emails or device data, will have to display their privacy policy prompts.

An initiative of the Google Safe Browsing Team, to enforce the safe use of personal information, the update additionally displays a warning when an app is about to use or transmit personal data, unrelated to the app’s functions. Furthermore, the app will also need to detail to the user what the information will be used for.

Without the proper consent of the user, the app will not be able to utilise any personal information.

Amidst the rising concerns over the dangers of how apps have been using personal data online, the update may perhaps serve as an added measure of protection for Android users.
