A Heart Attack Can Kill You in Minutes, but It Was Enough Time for Two Cops to Save a Life

C.K Ravi’s timely intervention saved Vikas’s life.

A Heart Attack Can Kill You in Minutes, but It Was Enough Time for Two Cops to Save a Life

Vikas, a 47-year-old businessman, and a resident of T. Nagar was returning home from OMR. Feeling unwell, he parked his car on the roadside, near the Tidal park junction. He was found waving for help, from a partially opened window, by traffic enforcement police inspector C.K Ravi.

Approaching the car, the policeman found Vikas struggling to breathe. Sensing a cardiac arrest, he called constable L Sampath, and together, they moved Vikas to the back seat of the car. Sampath kept up a conversation with Vikas to keep him conscious, while Ravi sped towards Adyar hospital.

Within 10 minutes, Vikas was admitted to the hospital.

The two policemen were commended for their quick thinking by the Joint Commissioner of Traffic Police, south, and the Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Police, east.

The policemen acted right on time. Within 20 seconds of a cardiac arrest, patients become unconscious. In about 4 minutes, irreversible brain damage occurs and could lead to death. Their quick thinking was also praised by Dr Manoharan, the Chief cardiologist at Adyar, who informed Vikas’s wife, Sumitha, that had there been a delay of even two minutes, saving Vikas would have been difficult.

Most people don’t know what to do when they face a situation like this, and with each passing minute, survival chances decrease by 7-10%. If you see someone who requires help, summon emergency medical help immediately, and administer CPR, after using the ‘look, listen and feel’ approach to determine whether the person has stopped breathing. Timely action, like in the case of Vikas, can save a life.
