Bengaluru Techies Decide to Give Govt School Kids a Surprise on Nov 14!

In schools, November 14th is a heavily anticipated day.
For children, it often means ditching the uniform for colourful casuals, getting to watch otherwise reserved teachers sing and dance, and fun food! So, when we spend 15 years with the privilege of feeling special on Children’s day, it is easy to forget that millions go to schools where this day is not even acknowledged. Not for lack of intent, but resources.
Disproportionate student-teacher ratios, dilapidated classrooms, dysfunctional and often non-existent toilets, and the irregularity of food are few of the several problems that mar the retention of students in India.
So, this Children’s Day, a group of techies have decided to go out of their way and give some Bengaluru government schools a facelift, the Bangalore Mirror reported.
Lead by Praveen Prem Shukla; the hopes to bridge the gap and recreate an environment similar to that of private schools.
They plan to paint the walls of these schools, make a garden (where possible)on the premises, install water purifiers for potable water, place dustbins, making basic sports kits available, distribute school bags, stationery, and even fix computers.
“We want to change the government school atmosphere into a ‘modern’ school environment on Children’s Day (November 14), and we want to bring a sense of pride/ownership among children studying here,” Praveen said to BM.
This group has identified some schools near Lalbagh, Shantinagar and Marathahalli. Volunteers started this project on October 2 and will complete it by Children’s Day.
Academics is only a part of a well-rounded education.
Often, sports education is a distant dream for these children.

“For us, every child is equal, and every child has a dream. Once we were in a school, and a boy asked me if he could get a football. That way, we also want them to help them in sports items and help them grow in that field,” he said to BM.
The team will also speak to the girls in these schools about the importance of menstrual hygiene and promote the use of sanitary pads.
“We believe that every child has equal rights to study, play, grow, stay healthy and shine in every aspect of life,” concludes Praveen.
