This Govt School Headmaster Used His Own Money to Revamp a School

Government schools have always borne the brunt of being under maintained and outdated when compared to their private counterparts.

Most of us must have come across at least one such school that seems to reflect a sense of abandonment—be it lack of proper funds or in most cases apathy.

However, one government school in Vellore has a different story to tell.

From proper walled compounds to the installation of urinals and water tank, this school had its share of refurbishment recently, all thanks to the school’s headmaster.

When fund allocations for an infrastructural revamp at Panchayat Union Elementary School in Pernampet that it had received on behalf of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, had fallen short, it was headmaster Pon Valluvan who shelled out money from his own pocket.

“There was not enough money to build toilets and water tank as per prescribed norms, so I put in ₹65,000. I have even raised the height of the wall to six feet, which is double the government norm. Urinals have also been installed,” Valluvan told The New Indian Express.

Under the national scheme, the school had received an amount of ₹1,96,000 for its maintenance.

The most interesting aspect is that the headmaster doesn’t even have such facilities in his own house! Though he had intended to contribute only for the toilets, he ended up building a water tank as well in the school premises.

According to TNIE, Valluvan has also made sure that every classroom is illustrated with murals of distinguished personalities and freedom fighters, upon whom the children look up to.

The 50-year-old headmaster hopes that someday the government schools would be on par with private schools.
