BBMP Says Bengaluru’s Floods Have a Culprit; To Take Strict Action Against It
The new rules aim to reduce the clogging of drains that are responsible for submerged roads. The chief reason behind clogged drains happens to be thermocol, says the BBMP.
Bengaluru has proved time and time again that it is ill-equipped to withstand heavy rainfall. Most recently, parts of the city were inundated forcing people to row their way across the neighbourhood! But that wasn’t the worst of it; five lives were lost too.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will now implement more rigorous rules to prevent such tragedies. The new rules aim to reduce the clogging of drains that are responsible for submerged roads. The chief reason behind clogged drains, they say, happens to be thermocol.
The BBMP identified thermocol as the new plastic and had found the material stuck in drain meshes across the city, reported the Bengaluru Mirror.
They also blamed e-commerce, shops and shopping malls in the Bengaluru for causing a thermocol deluge.
BBMP chief N Manjunatha Prasad said the new policy and fine would be effective against such dumping.
“We will issue notices to the commercials establishments and malls on recycling thermocol. If done, many mishaps can be avoided,” he said to the Bangalore Mirror.

Earlier, a fine for Rs 100 was fixed for the illegal dumping of thermocol, but the crackdown was ineffective.
Henceforth, the Palike said it would appoint retired marshals to monitor drains and keep an eye out for dumping. “The Palike is preparing a new policy to impose heavy fines on the individuals and commercial entities dumping thermocol near SWDs,” an official with BBMP told BM.
The amount of the fine, however, was not mentioned in the report.
BBMP officials had removed almost three truckloads of thermocol from the SWD near the Sony World Junction, a popular part of Bengaluru.
