Maharashtra Goes Green: How 5,020 Government Buildings Will Become Energy Efficient!
In the coming months, the conventional electrical appliances in the government buildings will be retrofitted with energy efficient appliances.
Maharashtra government is making some drastic architectural changes to its buildings to reduce the total energy consumption of the state. In an attempt to save ₹119 crore a year, they will make all the existing 5,020 government buildings energy efficient. This is part of the Centre’s initiative to ‘Make India Energy Efficient’, reports The Indian Express.
In the coming months, the conventional electrical appliances in the buildings will be retrofitted with energy efficient appliances – a project that will require an investment of ₹325 crore.
The entire cost will be borne by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).
In May this year, the government had launched the Energy Efficient Buildings Programme. Through this project, they would retrofit various government buildings, and use the money saved for social welfare. In manufacturing units, large facilities and buildings, a lot of energy can be saved in this way.
In a press release by the government, it was said that EESL will replace existing electrical fittings with about 7,000 energy efficient ACs, 11 lakh LED lights and 6 lakh energy efficient ceiling fans, 14,000 streetlights, which will lead to an energy savings of 100 MU, a 39 percent reduction in energy savings through retrofitting. They will then move to installing solar roof-top panels in these buildings, it was said.
By making their buildings energy efficient, the government will be able to save 124 million electrical units in a year. This project by EESL in Maharashtra is being deemed as the best so far compared to other states.
An agreement will be signed next week by the Public Works Department (PWD), which takes care of the daily maintenance of all government buildings, and the EESL, which will formalise the arrangement.
