Tamil Nadu Becomes First State in India to Announce Insurance Scheme for School Kids

Officials said the scheme was planned against the backdrop of Tamil Nadu accounting for the largest number of road accidents in the country.

The Tamil Nadu state government says an accident insurance scheme is in the pipeline for school children, the Times of India reported.

“The insurance for students is being planned for the first time in the country and discussions are on with chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. An announcement will be made soon,” minister for school education K A Sengottaiyan informed reporters.

Officials said the scheme was against the backdrop of Tamil Nadu accounting for the highest number of road accidents in the country.

The number of fatalities in road accidents across the state went up by 10 percent in 2016 with 17,218 deaths. The figures were collected and submitted to the secretariat by the Tamil Nadu police. At least 15,642 people were killed in road accidents in 2015.

Road accidents in Tamil Nadu are among the highest in the country. It also topped the list of most accidents in a state from 2002 to 2012.

The state currently offers a health insurance to all its employees and more than 1.5 crore below-poverty-line families.
