Melbourne Schools Will Soon Offer Kannada as a Second Language

Since the beginning of this academic year, students in Karnataka have been taught Kannada in all schools, including private, linguistic minority and Central board institutions.

All students from class one to ten in CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE schools and Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) have Kannada as either their first or second language.

And nearly 8000 kilometers away, while government schools in Melbourne, Australia are not making Kannada compulsory, they are offering it as the second language for the class 12 board examination, IndiaTimes reported.

The Victoria School of Languages, Melbourne will implement the course.

The Victorian School of Languages (VSL) is a government school that allows students to learn a variety of languages from class 1 to 12. Those students who do not have access to the study of these languages in their mainstream schools benefit from such a program. The school`s language program is delivered through face-to-face teaching in language centres across the state and distance education learning as well.

The decision was taken after the Melbourne Kannada Sangha submitted a report to the VSL, requesting the introduction of Kannada as an optional language in government schools.
A large number of Kannadigas live in Melbourne, which is why the members of the community wrote to the VSL. The Indian Association of Australia is also trying to bring Telugu in schools as well.
