Four reasons why you must watch India’s nominee for the Oscars – Newton
The Rajkumar Rao-starrer ‘Newton’ is India’s official nomination for the Oscars.
While usually, the committee of the Film Federation of India (FFI) has heated debates over India’s official Oscar entry, the decision to pick Newton was unanimous among all 14 members, reported the Huffingtonpost.
If you haven’t booked your ticket to watch this awesome film yet, here are four compelling reasons why you must do so now.
1. Universal acclaim
The film was screened at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year and was highly appreciated for its accurate portrayal of the democratic process in India as well as the story of Newton.
It also won the award for the best film at International Confederation of Art Cinemas (CICAE) forum.

Back home as well, it opened to stellar reviews. Here is The Indian Express – “‘Newton’ is a film to celebrate because it shows without telling, laying out the layers without descending into shrillness or facile solutions, and leaving us with a glimmer of hope.”
All in all, almost universally it is agreed that the film is a must watch.
2. Plot and content
A political satire as well as a social commentary on the importance of democracy, Newton is the story of a government clerk who is posted to a Naxal-affected area of Chhattisgarh to ensure that elections are conducted in a free and fair manner. It is the tale of this man who braves all situations to do his job.
Through Newton’s story, the audience is made aware of the power we hold in our hands in a democracy.

Though the plot may seem basic, it’s a reflection of what actually goes into keeping India a democracy, the realities of the jungle and the hard questions it asks make it a heavy hitter among recent cinemas.
3. Stellar cast
There is no doubt that this movie belongs to Rajkumar Rao, for his superb portrayal of Newton Kumar. Rao has been having a gala run in 2017, with films like ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ and ‘Trapped’ proving he is at the top of his game.
However, to the movie’s credit, it also has a great supporting cast line-up. Pankaj Tripathi (who was also last seen in ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’) and Raghubir Yadav (Lagaan, Peepli live) add weight to the film through their supporting roles.
4. Director – Amit Masurkar
This is the second directorial venture of Amit Masurkar, who directed the highly acclaimed film Sulemani Keeda in 2013. That film too was universally praised. So this one is an artist we should all keep an eye on.
While no Indian film since Lagaan in 2001 has made it to the final five of the Oscar nominations, and no Indian film has ever won – we must wait and watch how Newton fares.
