Varanasi to Vadodara & Surat: 10 things you must know about the new Mahanama Express

The all-new deluxe train, Mahamana Express, will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, as part of his two-day tour visit to the Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi.

It is India’s third Mahamana Express built under the Prime Minister’s Make in India initiative. It will connect Varanasi with Surat and Vadodara in Gujarat.

Here’s a quick look at all the details:

  • Named after former Hindu Mahasabha president Late Madan Mohan Malviya, the Mahamana Express currently runs on the Varanasi-New Delhi and Bhopal-Khajuraho routes.
  • The deluxe train connecting Varanasi with Surat and Vadodara in Gujarat will be launched at 3.30 pm by the Prime Minister using a remote control via video conferencing.
  • Mahamana will be a weekly train, departing from Varanasi every Friday and Vadodara every Wednesday.
  • The overall time taken to cover the 1,531-km distance between the two cities is stipulated as 27 hours and 30 minutes.
  • Travelling across four states, the scheduled stops for the train include Bharuch and Surat in Gujarat; Amalner and Bhusawal in Maharashtra; Itarsi, Jabalpur, Katni and Satna in Madhya Pradesh; and Chheoki in Uttar Pradesh, before terminating at Varanasi.

  • The Mahamana Express will have 18 coaches and has no AC-3 tier coach. The 18 coaches constitute – one AC 1st Class coach, two Second AC, eight sleeper and four general coaches, one pantry car and two guards brake vans.
  • The Express has plush interiors, ergonomically designed ladders to climb to the upper berths, snack tables for side berths, windows with powered Venetian blinds and roller blinds, LED lights for berth indicators and LED reading lights. Endowed with fire extinguishers in all coaches, it also has an electrically operated chimney in the pantry car.
  • To help passengers have a comfortable and hygienic journey, the train’s toilets have platform washbasins, bigger mirrors, an odour control system, exhaust fans and dustbins.
  • Run as a special train on its first journey; it will depart from Vadodara on Friday and reach Varanasi on Saturday. While Union Railways minister, Piyush Goyal will witness the departure at Vadodara, Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha will grace the arrival at Surat.
