E-Vehicle Owners Rejoice! Karnataka to Make Charging Pods Compulsory in Buildings

All high-rise buildings in Karnataka will be soon equipped with charging pods and points for electrical automobiles!

Under its new electric vehicle policy, Karnataka is pushing for pro-environment reforms. This includes mandatory amendments in building bylaws.

The policy, which got a nod from the cabinet on Wednesday, was proposed by the industries department with the aim of reducing environmental pollution in the state.

By introducing charging points and pods in public spaces like IT parks, SEZs, shopping malls, commercial buildings and residential apartments, the plan is to encourage citizens to switch from conventional to electric automobiles.

With this policy, the state government intends to become the hub for electric vehicle manufacturers and create job prospects in the concerned sector for over 55,000 individuals, reportedly.

“We are looking at easing the pressure on conventional vehicles and look at alternative modes of transportation. As part of this, the state government has decided to approve a policy which is also supported by the government of India,” law minister T B Jayachandra told Times of India.

Other facets of the policy include commissioning of an electric mobility research & innovation centre in the state as well as an electrical vehicle skill development centre that will train the workforce as per industrial requirements.

The government also plans on supporting startups whose business models will focus on economic applications for electric vehicles.
