RBI Debuts ‘Missing Middle’: All You Need to Know About the New ₹200 Notes

Magenta, stone grey, and fluorescent blue done, now enters bright yellow. The new ₹200 banknotes will make their debut on Friday, August 25, and will be the fifth new note to be announced since demonetisation last November. With no other denomination between ₹100 and ₹500 notes, the ₹200 note is expected to bridge the shortage. This is why State Bank of India’s (SBI) group chief economic advisor calls it the ‘missing middle’.

Here’s all you need to know about the new notes:

  • The new denomination has a motif of Sanchi Stupa on the reverse, besides the Ashoka Pillar emblem.
  • The base colour of the note is bright yellow.
  • The note also has other designs, geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme, both at the obverse and reverse.
  • It is of the size 66 mm x 146 mm.
  • ₹200 inscribed on the note is in colour-changing ink.
  • There are special features for the visually impaired, with the Mahatma Gandhi portrait and Ashoka Pillar emblem raised on the note.
  • It has the logo of the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan.

The new notes will be issued from select RBI offices and banks, but will not be available at ATMs as of now.
