RBI Debuts ‘Missing Middle’: All You Need to Know About the New ₹200 Notes

Magenta, stone grey, and fluorescent blue done, now enters bright yellow. The new ₹200 banknotes will make their debut on Friday, August 25, and will be the fifth new note to be announced since demonetisation last November. With no other denomination between ₹100 and ₹500 notes, the ₹200 note is expected to bridge the shortage. This is why State Bank of India’s (SBI) group chief economic advisor calls it the ‘missing middle’.

This is how they look:

Here’s all you need to know about the new notes:

  • The base colour of the note is bright yellow.
  • The note also has other designs, geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme, both at the obverse and reverse.
  • It is of the size 66 mm x 146 mm.
  • ₹200 inscribed on the note is in colour-changing ink.
  • There are special features for the visually impaired, with the Mahatma Gandhi portrait and Ashoka Pillar emblem raised on the note.
  • It has the logo of the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan.

The new notes will be issued from select RBI offices and banks, but will not be available at ATMs as of now.
