With These ‘Smart Bins’, Bengaluru School Girls Hope the City Will Tackle Garbage Better

Waste management is one of the most persistent crises faced by cities and towns in India.

Despite civic bodies across municipalities implementing various strategies to manage waste, one often ends up finding piles of garbage at different nooks and corners that are left unattended for days at a stretch.

Two school students in Bengaluru have come up with an awesome concept that will help corporation bodies tackle the issue.

Jothika K and Divya Sai, from St. Mathew’s Public School, have devised ‘Smart Dustbins’ that alerts concerned authorities with a message every time a bin is full. The girls had presented their innovation at a science exhibition in P.E.S Institute of Technology recently.

“While our country is growing day by day in terms of population, the garbage produced is also piling up abundantly. Public dustbins are overflowing with garbage and no one is bothered to clear them up as and when they get full. This is the reason we thought we should do something about this and came up with a concept of Smart Dustbins”, Jothika said, reports Bangalore Mirror.

Implementing sensor mechanics, the bins serve a multi-fold purpose. The lid, which is equipped with an automatic sensor, will detect a person approaching and open for the garbage to be dumped inside.

To indicate that the bin is full, the girls have installed a red light that will blink on reaching its capacity and alert people as well as the corporation about its condition. They have also incorporated a SIM card to the contraption – used for communication.

Another interesting feature of the innovation is that it raises an alarm when someone throws garbage near the bins.

“We have a proximity sensor fixed, and the range of detection is 1 to 2 meters. When someone comes and throws garbage outside the bin, the sensors identify it as a material and sets off an alarm or caution signal. This way, we can ensure no one throws garbage outside the bin,” added Divya.
