50 Delhi Schools Are Soon Going to Be Disaster-Ready and Safer Thanks to These 2 Organisations!
The Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society launched the Honeywell Safe Schools programme that intends to address unique challenges faced by each school and prepare them to be disaster-ready.
Two Delhi-based organisations have kickstarted a school safety and disaster risk reduction programme that will empower 25,000 students, 40,000 parents and 1,000 teachers across 50 schools in the East Delhi zone in order to prepare and make them disaster-ready.
The Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society (SEEDS) in collaboration with Honeywell India announced the launch of the initiative on Tuesday that will address challenges unique to each school and ensure that children go to school without fear, remain safe in school and return home safely, over a period of the next three years.
The Honeywell Safe Schools programme also intends to familiarize the staff following risk assessment for each participating school.
The programme will include exercises that will help prepare students, teachers and parents in emergency situations.
Prior to the programme, which is slated to be funded by a Honeywell India grant, a study was conducted by SEEDS to understand school safety and disaster-preparedness in the city along with evaluating risks and its perception that could lead in determining measures to tackle it.
“We are pleased to partner with Honeywell India to launch a pioneering school safety and disaster risk reduction program in the most vulnerable areas of Delhi. Our study highlights that often high potential risks are not recognized as imminent threats, and there is a need to create awareness among children, parents, teachers, and civic authorities to mitigate the impact of disasters,” Manu Gupta, executive director of SEEDS, said at the launch.
Though the national capital hasn’t been subjected to floods or earthquakes in recent times, awareness among the people about associated risks can help them act in times of emergency that can end up saving thousands of lives along with valuable assets.

It is also a natural partnership with SEEDS – an NGO globally recognized for their subject matter expertise in all three steps to disaster mitigation – preparedness, response, and recovery,” Vikas Chadha, president of Honeywell India, said.
Commencing in a phased manner with 32 government and 18 East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) schools in the first leg of the programme, SEEDS plans on expanding the campaign across the city post three years.
