Another Win for the Transgender Community! 5 Candidates Qualify NEET’s Medical Entrance

Another milestone for the transgender community!
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared the National Eligibility and Entrance Test or NEET 2017 results yesterday and among the eight transgender candidates who took the medical entrance exam, five have qualified, according to NDTV.

Last year, out of nine candidates three had cleared the exam.

The rise in the number of students from the community applying for higher education is heartening and paves the way for more students to dream and aspire.

This follows the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment in 2014 that gave legal recognition to the transgender community and gave them the freedom to opt for the ‘third gender’ status.

Justices K.S. Radhakrishnan and A.K. Sikri, who had been the part of the bench, in their ruling had directed both the centre and state governments to integrate the provision of socially and educationally backward classes for the transgender community; apart from conceding lawful acknowledgement.

The purpose behind this judgement was to ensure reservation for the community, which will help them to have better education and employment opportunities.

Previously, the students had no option but to mark either male or female for gender in application forms.
