IPS Officer Writes Poetry to Beat Stress & Inspires Other Cops Too!

Bengaluru-based IPS officer DC Rajappa writes poems to help him deal with the emotions and events that come with being an official in action.

DC Rajappa has written over 300 poems during his time in the police services, all of which are based on real-life incidents. When he began sharing his poems with his subordinates, to his delight, he found that many wrote poetry themselves, using it as a way to deal with the difficulties that come with their line of work.

He started collecting poetry written by other officers and compiling them into books. When he asked his men in Eastern Range districts, including Bellari, Shivamogga, Davangere , Chitradurga, to send their poems in, he received over 300 in response. From there on, 52 were used for a book Samavastra Dolagondu Suttu. Since then, a Samavastra Dolagondu Suttu 2 has also been published.

Due to the success of his officers’ poetry, DC Rajappa has officially formed ‘Police Sahitya Vedike’ where he spends time encouraging even more men to pen their daily lives.

DC Rajappa believes that not only will his officers benefit themselves through writing poetry, but it will also help them carry out their duties with more care and sensitivity; he tells Bangalore Mirror, “Poetry can do wonders. They will start talking politely with the public.”
