Folks in Bengaluru, it’s time to rejoice!

The inauguration of ‘Namma Metro’ Phase 1 operations will be held today and it will finally be on track and running on Sunday.

Almost after a decade’s timeline and investments worth 14,200 crore, the metro will be inaugurated by the state’s chief minister Siddaramaiah.

At a time when the traffic menace is skyrocketing and even pedestrians fear walking on the footpaths lest they be hit, the Phase 1 operations will be able to provide 42.3 km of intra-city connectivity and is expected to reach out to almost 5 lakh commuters.

Here’s a roundup of everything you need to know about the Green Line in Bengaluru:

1. From Nagasandra in the north to Yelachenahalli in the south, the metro route will span over a 24.22 km stretch with 24 stations including the terminals and will be covered in 45 minutes end to end.

2. While the metro is expected to run at a frequency of six minutes on a regular time frame, during the peak hours you can catch one every four minutes.

3. The stretch between Sampige Road to Peenya was functional since March 2014, while the route connecting Peenya and Nagasandra was launched in May 2015.

4. Connecting major busy points like KR Market, Lal Bagh, South End Circle and Banashankari; the latest edition adds 10 stations in the south to the route.

5. Except for the 4km stretch from Sampige Road to National College, which will be underground, the line will be elevated.

6. With Majestic being a two-level interchange station, passengers can switch from the new Green Line to the existing Purple Line or vice versa. One can purchase a single ticket for the entire journey.

7. Commuters can avail parking facilities at Chickpet, KR Market, National College, Lalbagh, South End Circle, JP Nagar and Yelachenahalli.

8. Though the fares have not been released by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corp. Ltd (BMRCL) yet, the maximum fare for the entire journey from the north to south is expected to be 55, according to The New Indian Express.
