No More 2-Hour-Long Trips to the Airport. Bengaluru to Get Another Hub, in Tamil Nadu!

Folks in Bengaluru or those flying out of the city, great news awaits you!

Those who frequently travel by air will soon be able to avoid the long and dusty journey to the Kempegowda International Airport and instead head towards the Hosur airport, located around 35 km from Electronic City.

A respite from the usual trip to KIA, gobbling up at least two hours by covering almost  50 to 75 kms  on a regular day, the opening up of Hosur Air Station at Belagondapalli village in Tamil Nadu, will help people in the city to avoid leaving for the airport hours ahead of their scheduled flight.

Offered by the TN Government, this move seems to be a feasible and effective one that could tackle the traffic menace the city suffers from.

Instead of the many futuristic proposals by the state government that don’t often end up not seeing the light of the day.

“Our former chief minister Late J Jayalalithaa had written to the Centre asking it to make use of the not-so-popular airports in the state and had also said that Bengaluru stands to gain the most with this move. Last week, the Centre approved (the use of Hosur airport) under the UDAN scheme and we also passed the agreement in the Cabinet. Hosur airport is now ready to take off”, Balakrishna Reddy P, MLA from Hosur constituency and Minister of Animal Husbandry and Welfare in the Tamil Nadu government, told Bangalore Mirror.

Reportedly, the TN government and Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding last week to enable low-cost air services from Hosur airport.

Owing to the government’s UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik) scheme, once the airfield starts functioning, the air travel for people residing in southeast zone of Bengaluru will become much more convenient.

Currently maintained by Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Ltd (TAAL) for chartered flights, the Hosur airport is a private airfield that is capable of housing Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s.

“We had restrictions before but we got the clearance. This is a great opportunity for the people of Bengaluru, particularly residents of Electronics City. We have many buses connecting (Bengaluru) to Chennai and Salem, but this (airport) will ease travel plans of people”, Reddy added.

He also added that this, being the first phase of implementation of the UDAN scheme, would not just promote regional air connectivity but also pave the way for better inter-state camaraderie between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
