No More Queues for Check-In? 10 Ways DigiYatra Will Make Air Travel Even Easier!

The government has launched a new initiative that will enable a digitally interspersed travel experience for the Indian air travellers.

The DigiYatra project, unveiled on Thursday, intends to provide the travelers a smooth experience by bringing together IDs such as Aadhaar cards, passports or PAN cards and the process of booking PNR of airlines, all under a single umbrella.

According to Civil Aviation Minister Jayant Sinha, this step by the government came forth following many sessions of discussions and meetings involving multiple stakeholders in order to provide “the technical architecture” as well as enabling regulations for a “Digital Traveller Framework”, according to a press release.

“The initiative envisages providing airline travellers in India a pioneering ‘digitally unified flying experience’ across all stages of their journey. All aviation stakeholders – airlines, airport operators, security and immigration agencies, cab operators, retail establishments and others are working to devise digital standards which can enable seamless exchange of data and information”, he added.

Here is everything you need to know about the DigiYatra:

1. The fundamental key to the entire process of DigiYatra will be the Unique ID. One can use their Aadhaar, the PAN card, and the passport to secure the UID.

2. At the time of booking, these IDs will be digitally linked to the PNR of the flight being taken. Owing to advanced biometric security solutions, this will allow the passengers to have a walk-through amidst the security scanners swiftly.

3. Ensuring a transparent and seamless travel experience, all the information pertaining to various facilities, protocols, airline timings and queue lengths at airports will be provided to the passengers.

4. This information will also include a digital boarding pass along with routing the passenger to the proper boarding gate.

5. The process will also enable a digital check-in as well as facilitate the self-checking in of baggage. Provisions for navigating through the airport using digital guidance systems, interactive kiosks and augmented reality apps will also be enabled.

6. One can also use another mode of identification for Digiyatra. Implementing a ‘QR code’ that is generated on smartphones, the process has been further made easier and convenient, since most people use smartphones.

7. All the time taken during the check-ins and queues can now be managed with the biometric information that will enable faster airport entry and automated check-ins without requiring any paper-based interventions.

8. Though a UID system for entering airports has already been functioning in manual form, digitally linking this system with the airline PNR will further simplify the process.

9. Even though your Aadhar will have the biometric details, the choice of Digiyatra is entirely up to the passengers, since the process is not mandatory and one can continue to travel using the prevailing modes of flight check-in.

10. The issues pertaining to data protection and the other existing IDs apart from Aadhar can be reported to the technical committee.
