9 Reasons That Make RCB the World’s First Cricket Team to Become Carbon Positive!
Using cricket as a platform to spread environmental sensitivity amidst the fans and public, the team has involved itself in various activities under the ‘Go Green’ initiative.
Apart from winning our hearts on field, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team has taken up an initiative that will have us swooning over them, all over again.
Using cricket as a platform to spread environmental sensitivity amidst the fans and public, the team has involved itself in various activities under the ‘Go Green’ initiative, winning itself the ‘Green trophy’ in this year’s edition of Indian Premier League, IPL.
In fact, Bengaluru’s own Chinnaswamy stadium became the country’s first green stadium last year, becoming equipped with solar cells.
It is not the first time that the RCB team has indulged in environment friendly practices. Here are some of the instances where the Royal Challengers stood tall amidst every other team for their eco-friendly initiatives:
1. During the third leg of IPL in 2010, from collaborating with the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport and Co. (BMTC) for more buses for fans to commute to the stadium to providing carpooling solutions for fans, the team’s initiatives were widely appreciated and found huge participation.
2. To lay emphasis on waste segregation, separate wet and dry waste bins were laid out across the stadium.
3. The following year, around 3,000 school children and 6,000 RCB fans across Karnataka helped the team achieve carbon neutrality by adopting tree saplings.
4. The team also donned green jerseys for the first time and played a ‘Green Match’ with the Kolkata Knight Riders team and exchanged saplings.
5. Launching ‘Greenaissance’, a campaign advocating the need for greenery retention in the city, the team had partnered with NDTV Coke in 2012, for the Support-My-School campaign, where they planted trees in government schools in the state.
6. Keeping up the green initiatives, the team won itself the title of ‘World’s first carbon positive cricket team’, by sourcing in wind energy during the home matches at the Chinnaswamy stadium in 2013.
7. During last year’s edition of IPL, the team decided to take their work a step further and arrived at the stadium on cycles while fans were encouraged to use CNG rickshaws.
8. As for this year’s edition, the jersey kits for the team were made from recycled plastic bottles that had been collected from fans and attendees. Over 11,000 PET bottles collected from the last T20 season were utilised.
9. Collaborating with Saahas NGO, the RCB team lead an on-ground initiative wherein the amount of waste that was generated during each match underwent segregation.
