This ICC Champions Trophy, 3 Indian Batsmen to Use Smart Bats With Chips. Here’s What That Means

Chips in bats are all set to make an entry in the ICC Champions Trophy this year and in case you’re wondering how potato wafers have anything to do with cricket, these are electronic chips we’re talking about.

Unlike regular willow bats, the ones with integrated chips will have a cooler purpose to serve.

A landmark in the history of cricket for its implementation of technology, the aim is to analyse the batsmen’s game during the international 50-over tournament.

Collaborating with Intel, which has been named the Innovation Partner by the ICC for 2017, a few select batsmen out of the eight participating teams will be using bats fitted with chips in their handles.

Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin are reportedly the three designated Indian players who will be equipped with the chip-installed bats.

“The new bat sensor powered by the Intel Curie technology that can be mounted on any cricket bat to generate data for every stroke that the batsman plays. With this technology, parameters like back-lift, bat speed and follow-through can be tracked for every cricket stroke,” ICC said, according to OneIndia.

The ICC statement added that many batsmen will be using these sensors that will enable new insights on stroke play and rich story telling in broadcast. Analytics from the sensor will also be available for fans to analyse.

Intel along with Speculur, a company spearheaded by sports enthusiasts, will be incorporating BatSense, allowing batsmen and their coaches to view, analyse, and annotate data sets from every ball played.

“Speculur BatSense with Intel Inside has the potential to transform cricket across a varied audience from coaches to aspiring self-taught cricketers,” Atul Srivastava, managing director of Speculur, said.

He also announced that plans to make this technology available to consumers would take lead later in the year.
