SughaVazhvu Healthcare (SV, was founded with a mission to deliver accessible and affordable primary healthcare services in low- to medium-resource settings towards the eventual aim of demonstrating a model for “disease-free communities”. SV’s primary care operations are based in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu and presently focus on two main initiatives:

A.      Chronic Disease Management (CDM): a novel pre-payment model to provide access and ensure treatment compliance for chronic diseases, presently diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol.

B.      “Disease-free Village” (DFV) through comprehensive primary care program: an attempt to develop a health system design / blueprint to demonstrate the possibility of “disease-free communities”.


Key aspects of SughaVazhvu’s approach to primary care delivery are its adherence to evidence-based treatment protocols and strong reliance on IKP-TechPrima, an in-house developed health management information system.

SughaVazhvu is recruiting a Senior Medical Officer (SMO) to play a critical role in the provision of evidence-based primary care in rural and semi-urban settings.

Job Description:

As a key member of SV’s efforts in offering accessible and affordable primary care, the SMO will:
• Be familiar with and adhere to SV’s evidence-based primary care guidelines / protocols in delivering healthcare
• Provide training to and periodically carry out evaluation of SughaVazhvu physicians, both upon induction and through continuing medical education sessions
• Contribute to the review and development of clinical protocols and processes to support the provision of comprehensive primary care
• Actively use SV’s IT system to perform clinical audit that will help manage overall patient health outcomes, ensure adherence to SV protocols and evaluate training gaps for individual physicians based on clinical performance
• Analyze and interpret patient health data to moderate care delivery according to established guidelines/ protocols
• Use patient data to develop programs to promote necessary behaviour modification (diet, exercise, etc.), especially in case of chronic diseases
• Participate in preventive aspects of primary care through activities such as screening, awareness creation and community outreach
• Participate periodically in outreach and off-site healthcare programs at the community level
• Serve as the first line of referral for all patients being provided care through SV
• Be familiar with the philosophy, goals and objectives of SV and work collaboratively to achieve them
• Assume responsibility and take appropriate initiatives to ensure that the clinical performance of the SughaVazhvu Physicians is high

Desired Skills and Experience


·         MBBS degree with at least 3 years of relevant clinical experience is a minimum requirement.

·         A Master’s Degree in Internal Medicine, Community Medicine or Public Health is strongly preferred.

·         Individuals with 3-5 years of work experience will be given preference.

·         The SMO should be a team player who can collaborate with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding work environment.

·         The SMO must have excellent oral and written communication skills

·         The SMO must possess basic computer skills and must have working knowledge of MS Office products.



The position will be based out of Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu; domestic travel as required.
