In what’s being touted as a breakthrough in the battle against climate change, two alumni from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharaghpur, have found a cheap way to capture carbon emissions. And they only tried and failed 16 times before getting it right!
Aniruddha Sharma and Prateek Bumb started their company Carbon Clean Solutions in 2009, when they were still students in IIT. Their focus was on finding a feasible carbon capture and storage methodology.
Carbon capture is the process of capturing waste carbon dioxide (CO2) from areas where there is excessive emission, such as power plants, and then safely depositing it in a place (generally underground) where it won’t enter the atmosphere.

While this method might sound like the answer to reducing the global carbon footprint, unfortunately up until now, the process has been so incredibly expensive that governments and companies have shied away from implementation.
But that’s where Carbon Clean Solutions, which is now based out of London, enters the scene. The company has built a plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, where it captures CO2 and then converts it into soda ash using a coal-fired boiler. It’s cheap and it will be capturing a whopping 60,000 tons every year.
Speaking to Reuters, Aniruddha Sharma elaborated on the importance of this technology. He said, “Carbon capture technology may have the single-biggest impact on emissions reduction. But for it to be widely used, it’s very important that the technology be cost-effective.”

Global leaders have increasingly called for vigilance when it comes to global warming and climate change. In fact, in accordance with the Paris Agreement, a number of countries had pledged over $23 million to help developing countries get technology that will aid them with implementation.
A technology such as this could potentially make the world a lot safer in the longer run.
