The award has been set up to encourage more state-funded schools to connect with the university. Sidhu got the award for helping one of her students get into a renowned university. When she feared a marking error in her student’s paper, she advised her to get it rechecked.

The re-marking was beneficial to the student and enabled her to get admission to the prestigious Pembroke College, Oxford, to study Theology.

Sidhu continuously stood beside her 19-year old student Esther Odejimi, who belonged to a poor socio-economic background. Sidhu made her believe in herself and assured her that she is capable of getting admission in any prestigious college.

Sidhu would stay late at school with her student and teach her the necessary lessons, till the school department had to ask them to leave as they had to lock the premises.

Overwhelmed by Sidhu’s gesture, Esther nominated her for the award and Sidhu won it. Sidhu is a perfect example of how crucial a role a teacher can play in a students’ life. We need more selfless teachers like Sidhu who go out of their way to encourage their students.
