How India’s First Disaster Management Village Will Recreate Train Wrecks to Improve Rescue Ops

Soon you’ll hear about trains catching fire and falling into rivers in a village near Bengaluru, but there’s nothing to worry about because this will be a part of a real-time rescue operation by the Indian Railways.

The village, which is 25 km from Bengaluru, will be the country’s first disaster management village, reports PTI. Overaged rolling stock such as coaches, wagons and locomotives will be used to replicate accidents, a senior official said.

“It will be just like the mock drills carried out by security personnel. It will be as real as it can get,” he said.

The operation is expected to begin by December next year. The construction is already under way. An area of 3.32 sq km has been marked in the village of Hejjala for a Disaster Management Institute and Safety village, which will cost ₹44.42 crore. The village has a population of 3,483 people.

The blueprint accessed by PTI said, “For augmenting theoretical classroom training with practical hands on exercise, a real environment for training in various conditions and scenarios of train accidents, a concept of safety village was envisaged.”

“For the practical training as a part of the safety village tunnel, cutting, embankment, other conditions and obstructions like overhead structures and platforms are being created. For carrying out underwater rescue and relief operations, a water body is also being developed,” it was further mentioned in the blueprint.

There will also be a virtual reality centre for analysing railway accidents.
